"Xenomania: Siam's Fascination with the Foreign" tracks the influences and incursions we've endured and embraced over the centuries - from Persia, India, Java, China, the kingdom of the Khmer and, in more recent times, the irresistible West.
"We have to learn from the past to understand the present - the historical evidence shows that Siam was a cultural crossroads," says museum director Rames Promyen.

With concept of ‘Brave New World by Post-Graffiti Blood’, 16 artists with individual experiences molded by urban culture express thought, emotion, and relation of surroundings through their unique techniques and styles. Each of paintings when existed together, results chaos and conflicts; ranging from flimsy, senseless story to solid and stable substance. Constraint of aesthetic has been released for public recognition, freed from fixed frames of thoughts, advancing new aesthetic for public art. As each paining holds its identity, at the same time learns to yield. Between extreme ends of spectrum, a community arises, setting up a new balance among dissimilarities. It is not a fusion, but a coexisting of individualities and a whole. The creation here is not of one particular artist, but a process of all, voicing out from a quiet lifeless wall that “Look at me, it is not important if you could see my merit, just look at me” Today, the wall and artists bring up this transitional space to unburden and give self a chance. It is to convince public that their conference is not a destructive fight but a creative clash with individual valiant to push beyond perception then adjust to the reality. Their bravery presented is not a proving ground for worshiping, but it is a command for mutual respect.

In »Dialogue in the Dark« exhibition visitors are led by blind guides in small groups through a specially constructed and totally darkened exhibition – where sounds, wind, temperatures and textures convey the characteristics of daily environments such as a park, a city or a cafe. In the dark, daily routines become a new experience. A reversal of roles is created: sighted people are torn out of their familiar environments, losing the sense they rely on most - their sight. Blind people guide them, provide them with security and a sense of orientation - transmitting a world without pictures. The blind and partially sighted guides open the visitors' eyes in the dark to show them that their world is not poorer – just different.

The Re-reading Khun Chang Khun Phaen Exhibition is based on a folk tale which gradually developed into an important Siamese literary work. First composed by storytellers during the Ayutthaya period, Khun Chang Khun Paen was revised, adapted and expanded by court poets and authors including Khru Janeg, Sunthorn Phu, King Rama II and Prince Damrong. Recently translated by renowned scholars and social critics, Dr. Chris Baker and Dr. Pasuk Phongpaichit, the English edition is entitled "The Tales of Khun Chang Khun Phaen". The translation and printing of this work was funded in part by a grant from the James H.W. Thompson Foundation.
